Thereafter, in most subjects a GCSE qualification is undertaken at the end of the Fifth Form, though some pupils and subjects aim for the Scottish Standard Grade qualifications. In the Sixth Form, the majority of pupils follow courses leading to A levels, at either AS or A2, and again some pupils in some subjects follow courses leading to Higher Grade qualifications.
These combinations depend on the most suitable combination for the candidate and his aspirations.
Control of the Academic Curriculum is managed by the Director of Studies, assisted by two Assistant Heads (Academic), who together form the Academic Management Team.

Merchiston follows a curriculum based around both the Scottish Curriculum 5–14 and the English National Curriculum from J4 to the end of the Fourth Form.
