Peter Deakin (Head of Geography)
Mr Deakin joins the School from Charterhouse where he has taught for the last 12 years, in September 2008. A graduate of Durham University, his interests largely in the areas of sporting and outdoor activiities.
Rupert Heathcote (photo centre)
Educated in Bath and Nottingham and Liverpool Universities, Rupert came to Merchiston from Fettes where he had taught Geography for 5 years and was in charge of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. He coaches rugby and cricket, and is very keen on outdoor pursuits, being a qualified Mountain Expedition leader.

Educated at Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School in Kent, and the Universities of Sheffield and Edinburgh. Taught at Wellington College, Berkshire, 1982-87. Has taught at Merchiston since then. "I was President of the Common Room 1990-94, and have helped out with soccer and junior cricket in the past, but I am not weathering awfully well so now I profess to be of more use in the classroom! I have remained actively involved in my research interests into the Quaternary of NW Scotland, glacial geomorphology and karst geomorphology. I have edited two books, and have written over 30 'academic articles.' Tony Millard (photo left) Educated at Kelvinside Academy, Glasgow and Aberdeen University. Joined V.S.O. in 1976 and taught in Fiji for five and a half years followed by six years in Zimbabwe, before joining Merchiston in 1988. "Geographically my main areas of interest are in the field of socio-economic Geography, specifically demography and development studies. Within the department, my main research interests are in the manufacture and use of geographical models, and pollution monitoring equipment. Outside of the classroom I am still an active distance runner and athletics coach, having previously run for and coached in the Scottish Universities and Fiji Amateur Athletic Federation."
