How are pupils' needs identified?
Prior to Entry .If there is a specific learning difficulty, it is very helpful if parents bring a psychological assessment from an educational psychologist which has been administered prior to entry. We also consult reports from previous schools and administer our own assessments.
- On Entry. Early in the Autumn Term, screening tests for new entrants are run in reading, spelling and mathematics. If difficulties are detected, pupils are referred to the Support for Learning Department, for further assessment.
- Internal Referral System. A system is in place, whereby at any time a subject teacher can refer any pupil to the Support for Learning Department for assessment.
- Referral to Outside Specialists. Referral to an Educational Psychologist will be organized, if a full psychological assessment is required.
How are pupils supported?
- Direct Tuition either individual or in small groups. Structured programmes are tailored to meet individual needs.
- Co-operative Teaching . Support for Learning teachers support the work of class and subject teachers in the subject classroom, either by targeting assistance to pupils experiencing difficulties or helping the class as a whole.
- Consultancy Support. Department staff will offer advice to subject teachers on how to improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching, in particular for pupils with learning needs. A complete Register of pupils who are receiving Support is circulated to all staff. Pupil Profiles and Individual Programmes are compiled and given to all subject teachers.
- Support for Learning Programmes. An individual programme is made up for each pupil who receives direct teaching in the Support for Learning Department. It contains SMART targets for each curricular area where help is required. These targets are formed after consultation with relevant subject teachers, the pupil himself and if appropriate, parents. They are reviewed and updated twice a year.
