Scholarships are granted to candidates who can demonstrate above average ability, and bestow honour on the successful candidates. They may in addition carry a financial benefit (which is means tested) in the form of 10% remission of fees. In the event of this concession being insufficient to allow the pupil to attend Merchiston, parents are able to apply for a means-tested Bursary, which can increase the value of the award up to 75% of the day or boarding fee. In exceptional circumstances, the School may consider higher levels of funding. Applicants' parents will be asked to complete a confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances. In this way, Merchiston strives to ensure that financial assistance is used to widen access to the School and to assist the greatest number of parents who require support. The School will also assist parents with applications to external trust funds, such as the Joint Educational Trust, for additional financial support. Further information about financial planning for school fees, applying for scholarships and bursaries, and support from Educational Trust Funds is also available from the Independent Schools Council Information Service (ISCis) website, in the Parentzone area of the site: www.isc.co.uk/ParentZone_WhatDoesItCost.htm
New Bursaries - the Laidlaw Awards - have been initiated from 2007 onwards. These provide up to 100% of the fees, paid by Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay for boys who are talented, but whose circumstances would not allow them to fund the School fees. Full details of available awards may be downloaded here [pdf document]. We request that candidates are registered with the Admissions Department before interview and/or assessment for a Scholarship or award. A Registration Form may be found in the prospectus pack, downloaded from this website or obtained from the Director of Admissions.
The process for admission is the same as at other levels within the School, and details can be obtained by clicking here. |
