You can arrange a date to visit the School to meet the Headmaster, Housemasters, staff and boys by calling Admissions, or you can visit an organised event.
Personal Tours Personal tours: The best time to see around the School is in the morning during term time, when you can meet staff and pupils in class. A personal tour normally takes about 2 hours.
Information Mornings: Our Information Mornings are held at least once each term. The mornings provide an opportunity for families to make an informal visit to see the School in action and to meet pupils and teaching staff. Coffee is served in the Memorial Hall from 10.30 am followed by a welcome address from the Headmaster. Sixth Form pupils give tours of the School, and a buffet lunch is served from 12.30 pm. Invitation cards are sent in advance of the Information Morning, or you can request an invitation to be included in your prospectus pack. The next Information Morning dates are: - Saturday 27 October 2007 - Saturday 1 March 2008 - Saturday 3 May 2008
Other opportunities to visit: In addition to formal tours, parents and their families are also welcome to visit us at School events. These include concerts; some chapel services; theatrical productions, and the Merchiston Rugby Sevens tournament. Each year we hold a Science and Technology Day to which we invite Prep School and Primary school children. For parents, there may be opportunities to attend parents’ dinners or our Commemoration Day Service and celebrations. Merchiston is also pleased to welcome members of the public to the School for historical tours through the Edinburgh Cockburn Society, and the Edinburgh Open Doors scheme. Further details of these events can be found elsewhere on this website. Please contact the Director of Admissions for an invitation card.
In addition to a tour, your son may like to spend some time at school himself, to experience something of life at Merchiston. A ‘Taster’ visit does not imply any commitment on your part to your son joining the school. Please contact the Director of Admissions, Anne Rickard for further details, or to arrange a visit.
Term time visits in class : (entrants to all year groups) Pupils who are considering joining Merchiston can visit to spend time in classes, in activities, and on the games field with their current year group. Boys intending to board normally stay for two days and a ‘sleepover’ night. There is no charge for a first term-time visit, but we may request a moderate charge for subsequent visits. The Director of Admissions, Anne Rickard, will be pleased to arrange a visit for your son.
Merchiston Juniors Activity Morning & Boarding-in Weekend: A morning of activities similar to the Saturday Morning Club is held in November each year for pupils aged 7, 8 and 9 who are considering joining Merchiston in J4/J5 or First Form. There is no charge for the Juniors Fun Morning and boys do not have to be registered with us.
Registered entrants who are considering becoming boarding pupils in our Second and Third Forms may spend part of the same morning in classes with our current pupils, and then take part in an action packed afternoon and evening of activities, with a Saturday night ‘sleepover’. Younger boys who are likely to be boarders may also join in the afternoon activities and the sleepover after the Activity Morning. Parents are invited to collect the boys after breakfast, or to join us for a Sunday morning service with their sons. For further details, please contact Carole Burnett Telephone 0131 312 2235, or email marketing@merchiston.co.uk
Easter Multi-sports camp: (boys and girls aged 6-14) A non-residential Sports Camp is held at the School during the Easter Holidays each year. The dates of the next Easter Sport Camp will be published at a later date. For further details please contact Carole Burnett Telephone 0131 312 2235, or email marketing@merchiston.co.uk
Big Activity Weekend: (Residential weekend for boys aged 8-12) The Big Activity Weekend is held in August Each year, and is for boys considering joining Merchiston. Accommodation is offered overnight in Pringle, our Junior House. Activities include those which boys can take part in during term time, and include sport, art & craft, electronics, cookery, magic, and an outing to the Edinburgh Festival.
Hotel and B&B accommodation in Edinburgh: If you are visiting the School, and would like to book accommodation in Edinburgh, you may find our information sheet helpful. It is usually best to book in advance, and well ahead of your visit: during the Edinburgh Festival (in August/early September), and at weekends, hotels and guest houses can get very full indeed.
