The structure of Drama at Merchiston provides for a biennial Musical, alternating with a 'serious' play - Shakespeare, or modern. Main roles in these go to pupils in the Fifth Form or above. The Spring Term also sees an annual 'Junior' production which is performed by boys in the Fourth Form and Shell. All these productions are staged jointly with St George's School for Girls. Recent ones have included Chicago, 42nd Street, Grease, Guys and Dolls, Nuremberg, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Pringle House puts on its own show each year; often this is a musical, most recently, Joseph.
The Lower Sixth produces a play each year with no adult assistance; the plays chosen are often very demanding and have included Shallow Grave and Dead Poet's Society as well as original work and adaptations by pupils themselves.
Visiting theatre companies to the School have from time to time given workshops and/or performances. |
