Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Administration of the D of E Award scheme falls under the Outdoor Education umbrella but of course, only one quarter of the scheme is actually about expeditions. All senior boys at Merchiston are expected to undertake a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition with participation at Silver and Gold level on a purely voluntary basis.

The Bronze expeditions are about to move to suitable low lying terrain in East Lothian with the Silver expedition practice and assessment being in the Pentlands and Lammermuirs respectively. The venue for the Gold expeditions tends to change on an annual basis although the practice is traditionally held in the Lakes/North Yorkshire. Some boys have used their participation in an overseas expedition to satisfy the award criteria.
