Hugh Laughland (1945-49) pictured on the left and Graham McConnochie (1946-50) spent 18 days aboard MV Orion from Hobart (Tasmania) via the Continental Antarctic shelf to Bluff in New Zealand. It was a fantastic and emotional trip to the ice where they saw thousands of penguins, sea lions, bull seals and over 40 different types of sea birds. They also experienced a force 11 hurricane. Hugh and Graham thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of space - to be on ice, facing South and knowing that there is nothing but ice all 800 miles to the South Pole was awesome!
