On this occasion, Gayle Cordiner (Director of Marketing), Barry McCorkell (Director of Development), Kirstine Hogg (Merchistonian Club), Barbara and I visited London to meet Merchistonians. This event usually happens on an annual basis and it is kindly hosted by Hugh Maule (77-83), who is a partner in Lawrence Graham and head of its Business & Finance Group. This firm has moved from the Strand (a sumptuous enough location in itself) to London Bridge. We were greeted by the wonderful sight of the Bridge, beautifully illuminated against the night sky, which enhanced its unique architecture. Over the course of the evening, we enjoyed meeting many Merchistonians and hearing stories of their school days, including some nicknames of members of staff who are still in the Common Room – I have promised not to divulge the names to those concerned! What struck us all was the happiness of the occasion, yet also the way in which so many Merchistonians have made, or are making, their way in the world, having moved on from their education at Merchiston. Everyone had a story to tell about their time at School, but also about the challenges and joys of university courses, including Masters, and the world of work. We took the opportunity to show the School DVD as well as a rolling slideshow of the present Merchiston.
The following Merchistonians (and spouses) attended the Drinks Party; however, the list may not be entirely accurate, and I may have missed some people out, for which I apologise.
IJ Aitchison, STW Anderson, RG Barber, WG Benzie, RE Corstorphine, JJ Cowperthwaite, A Craig, N Craig, AC Dickson, DG Dunbar, RA Inglis, RV Jones, CD Licence, RJ Mitchell, JD Murray and Mrs Penny Murray, MA Pancheri and Mrs Marion Pancheri, RE Ratazzi and Mrs Sue Ratazzi, AW Robson, AH Sinclair, AJ Thompson, KH Valentine, DC Watt
As the Headmaster, I thanked the Merchistonian Club for their support of the new Sixth Form House, and we were able to show the audience some slides of this most exciting development.
Finally, it is very important to acknowledge that Kirstine Hogg retires in July 2008 and I was delighted to thank her on everyone’s behalf for the care and attention with which she has looked after the Merchistonian Club and indeed Merchistonians. They have been incredibly fortunate to have such a sensitive, intelligent person at the heart of the Club.
