As reported earlier this year, a portrait of the late Alan Bush (Merchiston 1958–1968) has successfully filled one of two remaining gaps in our collection of past Headmasters. Carole Danielson of Biggar has now finished the second picture, that of Donald Forbes (1969–1981). The artist faced another huge challenge, that of portraying faithfully one whom she had never met and of whom she had only a handful of black and white photographs. The project took over a year, and it included the scrapping of a well advanced first work. In the end her instance on perfection and her research and planning have been well rewarded. She used three different “sitters” and borrowed clothes which had belonged to Mr Forbes. Other material enabled her to create a most effective background of Merchiston buildings and of a cricket game. This second portrait has met with much approval, and expressions of amazement at the successful image reflecting the style, the dignity and the geniality of one who was a very perfect gentleman. These two recent acquisitions will hang in the Old Library where they will readily be seen and enjoyed and where they will further dignify that special room.
