On a beautiful, sunny morning in May 2007 we were delighted to welcome the Gordon family to Merchiston to formally present a Monkey Puzzle Tree and wooden bench in memory of their son, Jonathan, who died tragically young in 2006.

Throughout his life, Jonathan enjoyed ‘The Great Outdoors’ (he was an enthusiastic fisherman, particularly on the Dee), often admiring the huge Monkey Puzzle trees on the Magpie Lawn of the Botanical Gardens opposite his home in Wellington, New Zealand. The Gordon family hope that this Monkey Puzzle tree will continue living and growing for a long time to come, and that parents, boys and teachers will be able to relax on the bench and watch a good game of cricket or rugby!

Although his passing has left a huge void in the lives of all those who knew him, the bravery and dignity Jonathan showed will be remembered through this generous gift and will serve as an inspiration to all.
