Today we had a visit from Alistair Darling MP, and over 100 girls; the boys were clearly excited about this event! The girls came from St Margaret's and St George's, and Alistair Darling gave an hour of his time to answer the questions of the girls, and our Sixth Form boys (plus a few younger boys who had sneaked in!) The questions started with 'What impact do you think Saddam Hussein's execution will have on Iraq?' and they didn't get any easier! Topics covered were the state of British agriculture, prison reoffenders, the American midterm elections, windfarms, democracy, environmental problems in China, the middle east, death penalty, the Monarchy, charitable status for independent schools, ASBOs, the effect of Scottish MPs voting on English issues, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. On a more personal note, Mr Darling refused to answer the question 'We all make mistakes and learn from them; what mistakes have you made, and what have you learned from that?', as well as 'Are you a Blairite or a Brownite?', and 'Given the forthcoming changes in government, where would you like to end up?' He did share some of his thoughts on David Cameron, but when asked 'How much would it cost for a peerage?', said he would have to look into it further!
