Final score:

Bell Baxter HS 15, Merchiston 8

Yesterday saw the semi-final of the Scottish Schools Rugby Cup, a hard fought tie between Merchiston and Bell Baxter HS, held at Kirkcaldy. A cold evening, with a strong wind and a muddy pitch did not put off the supporters, with a huge crowd in the region of 1000. 5 coaches from Merchiston travelled north, and a number of Merchistonians, parents and friends added to the Merchiston support.

The first half was extremely close, with captain Fraser Brown making the first score of the match with a try. Bell Baxter soon responded with a penalty, before Douglas Bringhurst replied to give Merchiston a tight 8-3 lead going into half time. Bell Baxter came out stronger in the second half, scoring their first try of the match and converting it. Merchiston pushed up the field but another try from Bell Baxter took the score to 15-8. With less than ten minutes to play the Merchiston boys showed real character as they persevered in attack, coming very close at one point.

Unfortunately, it was not to be, and the final whistle brought disappointment to the Merchiston players and supporters alike.

For Bell Baxter, the final against Dollar beckons next Thursday. For us, the season continues against Glasgow Academy on Saturday.
