At 2 p.m. on January 12th 2007 our largest Pinus Nigra Maritima (625) was blown over, leaving the five remaining of the so-called 'Seven Sisters' nearby. It had received probably a significant amount of shelter from the Castle Gates beech which came down last year. The tree was mentioned in the recent survey by Donald Rodger as being 24 m high and 100 years old. Only one young planting was crushed, but it was a significant specimen.

In 1983 the Queen planted a tree on her visit to our 150th celebrations. It never really thrived, and its replacement struggled inexplicably and died too. With this embarrassing history in mind, two young beech were planted (2005) in a new location, and we did not tell them, nor anyone, which one was royal. It was one of these that was crushed this week.
