A grim rainy Saturday evening saw many members of Chalmers East (and three Common Room ‘groupies’!) turn out to support The Mystic Floorboards, Merchiston’s Shell rock band, as part of the second heat of the annual Edinburgh schools’ ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition. The four boys in the band gave a striking and charismatic set of three songs: a cover of Razorlight’s ‘Golden Touch’, and their own ‘The Asbo Song (No Room for Mistakes)’ and ‘The Edinburgh Song’. Jack, on drums, grinned broadly at several points; we all knew that he was having a good time (or had he caught the eye of an admirer in the front row?), Fergus and Guy gave energetic performances; Rory, the front-man and main vocalist, had cool to rival the Atlantic!
In all, the band worked well with each other, and quickly established a lively rapport with their enthusiastic audience.
Eight bands had made it through to this stage of the competition. The performances over, votes were cast by the members of the audience: the Merchiston supporters were jubilant when it emerged that The Mystic Floorboards had won (polling eighty-four votes) and will now go through to the final gig, to be held in late April.
