After last year's tournament being cancelled due to snow, we were all hoping for better weather yesterday, for the annual Merchiston Sevens tournament. Fortunately it stayed dry - at least until the final hour! 23 Schools visited, so 24 competitors including Merchiston meant it was a very busy day - we estimate there were over 1000 people in the grounds at the busiest time. The U13 tournament was won by St Olave's Prep School, who had travelled up from Yorkshire, so they would have been happy on the long drive home. Ardvreck were second, and St Martin's Ampleforth third. In the U14s Merchiston reached the final, where they were beaten by Stewart's Melville College. Stewart's Melville made it a double, when they also won the U15 competition. In the U18s there was disappointment for the home team, as we were knocked out in the Quarter Finals by Austin Friar's - a last minute try meant they were the ones celebrating at the end. They played well and eventually competed against Fettes in the final. Fettes were too strong for them, however; their captain is a full Scottish international at Sevens, so they had experience on their side! Fettes therefore won the tournament - their third win since the Merchiston Sevens began in 1990.
