The principal guest this year was Irvine Laidlaw (MCS 1956–60).

The Chairman of the Governors, Charles Abram, announced that he was retiring from the Board after many years' service, the last seven as Chairman, and that he would be succeeded by Malcolm Gourlay. He spoke of his relief that, after so many years of frustration, building was finally underway on the new Sixth Form House.

The Headmaster spoke about Ambition, Adventure and Friendship.

Lord Laidlaw's address focused on the fact that it was not necessarily only those who were most successful at school who could do well later in life. He quoted examples from his own career, showing a DVD presentation including his involvement in motor racing and sailing, both activities he has taken up relatively late on.

Lord Laidlaw made three important announcements during his speech:

1) There is to be an official partnership between the School and ThePlace2be, part of his Youth Project.

2) He has endowed major scholarships to Merchiston to enable boys who would not otherwise be able to come here to benefit from a Merchiston education: the first of these will arrive in September

3) He was donating £1 million, towards the building of the new Sixth Form House. He formally presented the Headmaster with a cheque. He is pictured (centre) with Charles Abram (left) and the Headmaster.
