Today 79 Merchistonians, 3 widows of Merchistonians and 7 former governors gathered at School for a reunion. The Merchistonians were all here prior to 1950 and included JS Crerar (pictured) who attended Merchiston from 1927 to 1932. There were several of his vintage at the 90+ table.
The day started with tours of the School, showing the changes which have occurred over the last half-century. Music played a part, with organ playing by AM Thomson (1941-45) who has been an organist since first learning on the Memorial Hall organ, and all gathered in the Memorial Hall (pictured) to sing the original School Song and 'Rugger Song'. The Headmaster commented that we could no longer sing the original School Song owing to the lyrics, which in the verse about rugby include the words 'we'll smash them up'! The younger Merchistonians present then formed a choir to lead the singing of the current new School Song written by CG Mair in the 1940s whose brother Norman was there.
PAS Davidson (1946-51) had come the furthest: all the way from Australia. He is pictured here with Alan Mickel (1948-52).
