The Mathematics Department is delighted to announce two new arrivals: Master Harry Rocco Charman (non-resident) was born to Richard and Deborah last month – all are well and our warm congratulations go to the new family!

In a separate development, we have taken delivery of Christopher the Conic Section (resident - photo below). Christopher’s name comes from the fact that he is far-travelled, having come to us all the way from Illinois in the United States, a journey which took just one week. Christopher replaces the conic section bequeathed to the Department by ex-Head of Department, Mr Charlie Windass (still well known to many in the Merchiston community)…we’re not saying Charlie’s section is old, but he arrived at Merchiston 3 years before Mr Vaughan (however, with age, of course, comes wisdom…!)

Charlie’s Conic Section now enters a well deserved retirement after many years residence in M2, to be replaced by Christopher, who takes over the mantle of Mrs Muetzelfeldt’s multi-functional Further Mathematics demonstration kit.

In other news, on Thursday 8th November, almost forty members of the VI Form took part in the senior Mathematics Challenge for 2007 (photo below), far and away our biggest ever entry…we await the results with baited breath!

And finally…our motto

Mathematica Omnibus Parata

(‘Mathematics For All’ – with thanks to Mrs Gillon for linguistic advice!)

S Campbell (Head of Maths)
