The History Department was delighted to welcome back Professor Hew Strachan of All Souls' College Oxford this week. Professor Strachan is one of the country's leading experts on warfare in History, and he has visited Merchiston on several occasions to share his knowledge and enthusiasm for study of the Great War. His talk to the IV Form lived up to expectations, painting a vivid picture of life in the trenches, and exploding a few myths about the First World War. After the talk, Professor Strachan stayed on to have dinner with some of our best historians, entertaining them with his experiences in academia and offering some useful advice and tips for university entrance.
