On the evening of Tuesday 11th March, a record number of boys (84) played in the School solo piping and Drumming competition. We had started the solo piping events at 6pm (an hour earlier than advertised) to accommodate the large entry in a bid to finish the evening at a reasonable time. The piping events were judged by Barry Donaldson (ex-Stathclyde Police World Pipe Band Championship winner on numerous occasions - who is coming to join the Piping Team at Merchiston next term to stand in for Tom Speirs who is going to cut down to 1 day a week), and Drumming by Drum Major Jim Clark who is the Senior Drumming Instructor for the British Army. Some of the boys' parents were in attendance, and all enjoyed an excellent buffet and refreshments during the interval. The competitions were over by 9.30 p.m. and the Judges expressed their satisfaction with the musical standard which had been on display. The prizes were presented by the Rev. Allan MacPherson. A vote of thanks, and tokens of our appreciation were given to all concerned, by Gordon Campbell, Master i/c Piping
