On Monday the 25th Feb J4/5 met at Waverley Station to catch a train to York. Packed lunches in our hands we lugged our bags to platform 2 and when the train arrived found our reserved seats. Food, Nintendos, Ipods, cards and games were unpacked and we settled down for the long journey. Two and a half hours later we pulled in to York. We waited very patiently on the platform while Mr Osborne tried to operate his GPS and find out which way to head! We consulted the good old-fashioned map and headed off. Mr O was determined to reach the checkered flag on his GPS and after a long sight-seeing walk and aching shoulders we arrived at our destination.

We checked in and staggered up the stairs with our bags, and after a short rest, chocolate muffin and juice headed back in to town for our first activity, The Dig. There we pretended to be archaeologists in rubber trenches, searching for bones and treasures. We met a viking called Snobby and Kirill became King Bobby of the Saxon army who fought the Norweign vikings. Sadly, Bobby died a tragic death and the vikings cheered victoriously.

We wandered around the city, looked at the Minster and climbed the castle steps before heading to Old Orleans restaurant for dinner. We left with our balloons and walked back to the hostel along the river bank for a well earned night's sleep. Not everyone had a quiet night as poor Kirill was unwell!

After a very tasty breakfast and packing our bags the next morning we headed for Jorvic Viking Centre and boarded our time traveling train. We arrived in a very smelly York city in the year 795AD. We wandered around the streets watching and hearing what life was like, meeting very interesting people along the way.  We arrived at St Olaves for lunch and met our oponents who were very friendly and welcoming. Both matches were closely fought with Merchiston U9 and U10 gaining victories. After chatting over tea we presented St Olaves with a Merchiston scarf and thanked them for a lovely day.

By now our bags seemed to be full of rocks and we took a short cut back to the station and our train to Edinburgh. Tired but very happy we arrived back at 6.30pm to be greeted by our parents, and all headed home full of exciting stories.
