On Saturday at the Annual Prizegiving ceremony we were delighted to present a new award for the Department of Sport. This is the ‘Stewart Crerar Quaich for International Sporting Achievement’ which has been kindly donated to the school by Stewart and his Grandfather,  J Stewart Crerar. Mr Crerar attended Merchiston between 1927 and 1932 and is reputed to be the oldest living Merchistonian. He moved with the school from Merchiston Castle in  Colinton Road to the present site. He was involved in the 'picking stones' off the current 1st XV Rugby pitch and played in the Fifteen and the Eleven for three years, and he was a ‘miler’ in Athletics.

At the grand old age of 95, J Stewart Crerar stood at the front of the Memorial Hall with his grandson, also Stewart, and congratulated Sam Hughes on his achievements before he went onto the stage to recieve the Quaich from Robbie Grant.

Sam joined Merchiston in September 2007 and was a member of the 1st XV and Cup XV and scored a try at Murrayfield in the final of the Scottish Cup. He was selected to represent Scotland at Under 18 level and he performed extremely well playing in all of the matches in the series. He had to adapt to play in various positions and did so with excellence. His involvement in Merchiston Sport has been outstanding and we were delighted that he was the winner of this award in its first year. He is pictured above centre, with Stewart and his grandfather.
