Chalmers East is the House for all boys in their Shell year. This is a very important time in a boy's Merchiston career because it is the start of the two-year GCSE course. Most boys have their 15th birthday in Chalmers East although this can vary. There is a standard academic programme with columned subject choices, but there is the opportunity to study extra subjects outwith the timetable and boys have studied Latin, Greek, Dutch, Chinese and Russian at GCSE level.
New boys can enter Merchiston at Chalmers East to start GCSE courses and the horizontal house system helps them integrate quickly.
