On Thursday (18 June) 8 boys and girls from the Tennis Academy participated in the Finals Day of the Scottish Schools Team Tennis Championships for St George's and Merchiston.
The Merchiston Boys were looking to build on their first ever title win in 2008 and the girls were attempting to go one step further than last year's performance and secure St George's first title since the 1980s.
The morning session saw the girls competing against Nairn Academy. All the girls won their singles in the first round of matches to ensure victory before even playing doubles. Morven at number 1, Danielle at 2, Juliet at 3 and Imogen at 4 all put in very convincing performances. They then went on to win both doubles matches with Dani and Morven teaming up and Juliet with Imogen completing a 6-0 victory.
The boys started their campaign against Robert Gordon's with two doubles matches. James and Patrick won their match in straight sets, whilst Robbie and Jasper had to fight hard to win theirs in 3 sets. The singles matches proved challenging and whilst all the boys secured their matches a 6 - 0 scoreline did no justice to their opponents.
In the other Semi-finals Hutchisons Grammar School beat Dunblane High School and Mearns Castle in the girls and boys events respectively.

For the Finals, both the boys and girls teams were up against Hutchison's. Merchiston played their singles first and James at 1, Patrick at 3 and Robbie at 4 all secured points. Jasper had a very tight match at 2 unfortunately going down in 3 sets. The doubles pairings then secured both matches to win the tie 5-1. This was another convincing win for Merchiston, the Scottish Cup Champions for the second year running.
For St George's, Morven and Dani and Juliet and Imogen won their doubles to go 2-0 up needing just 2 more wins to secure the title. Morven at 1 and Dani at 2 both won their singles matches to give St George's a 4-2 victory. This is St George's first ever Scottish Cup Title.
The boys and girls in The Tennis Academy love to represent their respective schools in the Scottish Cup and to be successful is a fantastic achievement in only the second year of The Tennis Academy. This is testament to the players' hard work and commitment and is just reward for all the teaching staff at both schools.
