During the summer term, 25 members of the Merchiston Common Room took part in its biennial 'football predictions' competition. This takes place in even numbered year and alternates between the UEFA European Nations' Championships and, as happened this year, the World Cup. As ever, the competition led to vastly increased interest in the early stages of the tournament and there was much in the way of 'in-depth analysis' of each and every goal from the 25 armchair 'experts' participating in the event.
The competition was won by a stalwart of the Common Room football team, the tenacious and pugnacious Mr Mick Pitts - watch out, first XI players, he's hard but fair (with emphasis on the hard!); the runners-up were Dave Stranock, Fraser Carver and (somewhat controversially, since he organised the event) Stephen Campbell.
The most important part of the competition was, of course, to raise some funds for the wonderful cause of St. Andrews's Hospice, Airdrie, which provides Palliative Care to the people of Lanarkshire and operates under the care of the Sisters of Charity. The photograph shows Stephen Campbell presenting a cheque for the £85 raised to Sister Agnes, the senior nurse at the Hospice.
