Towards the end of the Summer Term, Sixth Former James entered the Scotish
regional finals of the Young Engineer for Britain competition without
realising that it would lead to many months of further project development
and finally a visit to Greenwich in London. James initially developed a
wireless guitar link for his AS Electronics coursework project, and then
modified this to include a remote distortion effect for his entry to the
first round of the competition. Having only just managed to get the
prototype working late in the evening of the day before the first round of
the competition in Glasgow, he then forgot to take all his presentation
materials with him! Despite this, he easily won the Glasgow round of the
competiton and made it through to the finals in September. Over the summer,
James completely redesigned his project adding extra functionality and a
better degree of reliability. Once again the project hit problems when
he returned to school as the new wireless links refused to co-operate and
progress stalled. With a final push, the project was finished with a day to
spare and on 10th September James and Mr Nicholls headed for London. The
finals of the Young Engineer for Britain competition were great fun and the
standard of work from all competitors was quite outstanding. After a whole
day of judging, 150 invited guests enjoyed the diverse range of finalist's
projects and James made many interesting and potentially useful contacts.
The awards ceromony and evening banquet took place in the magnificent
Painted Hall of Greenwich's Old Roya Naval College. At the end of the day
James was not lucky enough to win a prize but over the last few months had
certainly had developed a fine engineering project, met some great people
and given it his best shot. He will now continue to develop the wireless
guitar effects control project and hopefully find a company willing to take
on the idea commercially.
