Guiding boys into their teenage years is a tremendously rewarding role. While the day to day running of a sizeable boarding house keeps me, and my wife, the tutors and prefects very busy, the development of young men is at the heart of what we do. Characters develop, qualities emerge, challenges are met, and lessons are learned over the year. At this age boys are really beginning to think through their own values and we hope to lead them into appreciating the virtues of integrity, kindness, courage, cooperation and justice. We hope to create a community in which boys support and look after each other.
I teach Mathematics and have been at Merchiston for 10 years, moving from a school on the Isle of Wight. I recently took a year off to study theology, philosophy and counselling. My wife, Mairi, and our young son Paul are very much part of the house community. And finally, being something of an amateur magician, I run a magic club for Third Form.
