Sponsored WalkThis years Sponsored Walk took place on Wednesday 21st June. The weather as predicted was windy and rainy. So it was decided that we would walk a shorter distance, to Balerno and back. We were split into groups after JRB talked us through the route. We then set of out the back of Merchiston where the squash courts are. Some people were keen to finish the walk and get back inside as quickly as possible. Others didn't mind the weather and set off at a slow pace. Some people found it hard to remember the directions but luckily no one got lost. We walked beside the Water of Leith on an old railway line. The first place we reached after a short distance was Juniper Green and then we went on to Currie where we met up with JRB in the Pringle Mini-Bus. Unfortunately he wasn't there when some people arrived so they got a little bit confused and lost. A few miles onward we reached Balerno with aching legs, eager to get back and relax. Maybe that was the reason that many people seemed to pick up the pace and fight their way back. Andrew S, Alex K, and I finished first at 1:20 after running for an excruciating 2 hours 10 minutes. The last people to finish came in to Pringle at 3:46 after a rather long 4 hours and 16 minutes. Thanks must go to JRB, Mr Hall and Mr Lucas for helping and organising this event for charity. Hugh Author visits III Form...On Thursday 9th March the author Katie Grant came to talk to the Third Form about her series of books The Blood Red Horse, Green Jasper and soon to be in 2007 the final book in the trilogy Silver Blaze. Her talk was very amusing, especially her story about her ancestor's head. She says her ancestor's history helps her write her historically set stories. 3b English found the talk very interesting because we are doing essays on The Blood Red Horse in lessons. After her talk there was a sale of her books that went like wildfire, and a signing session as well. She really enjoyed here tour of the school, especially meeting Georgina, the 7-foot-long boa constrictor. Thanks go to Mrs Williams for organising the visit and to K.M.Grant for coming. by David Recent news:Peter L has gained a place in the U14 East of Scotland, and U13 Scotland squads
Exchange boys from Germantown Friends School, Philadelphia
During the month of February we experienced a different school, along with a different lifestyle. When we landed in Edinburgh we were very anxious to meet our hosts. The school amazed us with its beautiful architecture, and acres of rugby pitches. The boys at Merchiston were very helpful in making us feel at home at the new school we would be going to every day for the next month. Our hosts, Angus and Thomas could always help us if we were lost or didn't understand Merchiston's ways. When we weren't in school, we had a great time with our host families experiencing places in Edinburgh, and also throughout the UK . We could never imagine the opportunities to try and see new things that we couldn't do in America . To be able to go to cities we had only read about, to stay with a boy our age that we had never met, and to experience a new school with wonderful aspects. During our stay we were able to go on half term for a week with our host families. Cameron got to travel to London, where he was able to stay in a flat right near the city. I enjoyed doing such things as Madam Tussauds Wax Museum, the London Dungeon, The London Eye, Imperial War Museum, and a boat trip down the Thames River. During half term I also saw more of Edinburgh, including Edinburgh Castle, Parliament, Britannia, and just seeing the shops. Henry also got to travel to London during half term, where he got to meet one of his four sisters and see where she goes to college and also go to The London Eye, Imperial Museum, the British Museum and the Tower of London . After 3 days in London he went up to the Northwest of Scotland to stay at his hosts' holiday house. I had a lot of fun being able to live in the Highlands for a few wonderful days. We had a wonderful time enjoying what Scotland had to offer, and can't explain the kindness and generosity we were given from different people. We were sad at the thought of leaving Scotland, but were anxious to see our families. We had a great time on the exchange, and are hoping that Angus and Tom have as great as an experience that we had when they come to Philadelphia. Henry & Cameron (from Philadelphia)
