1) Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh
Merchiston Castle School is unique among boarding schools in Scotland in that it is the only one open to boys only. Founded in 1833 in the centre of Edinburgh, it moved to Colinton House and the ruins of Colinton Castle, four miles south-west of the city, in 1930.There have been a number of additions over the years-the most recent being a music school, technology blockand library-and facilities are now very good. The school prides itself on its adherence to Scottish values and traditions and there is emphasis on striving for excellence, belief in the value of individual, in hard work, integrity and good manners.
Academic standards are high and results consistently good. Last year it topped the Scottish independent schools' league table for it's a-level results. Music is particularly strong as are art, design, drama and debating. A wide range of sports and games is available and the school has long had a reputation for excellence particularly in rugby with over 60 Merchistonians having played at full international level.
