The Times Online (18 July 2006)

by Douglas Henderson

Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh lost only once (to Fettes), but enjoyed another fine season. Hamish Locke scored 205 not out against Loretto, and Carleon Browne 178 against Newcastle Royal Grammar School, but the outstanding batsman was Alex Tilley, with five centuries and a total of 1,171 runs, a record for Merchiston and a fine achievement in this normally damp part of the UK. In 2006, in May at least, Scotland enjoyed better weather than elsewhere.

Brothers Legget to Europe (Click link to original article)

TWO brothers from Gifford were hit for six after being chosen to play cricket for Scotland at European Championship competitions in Ireland and Denmark.

Charles and Peter Legget have been picked to represent Scotland against Ireland, Denmark and Holland in the annual events starting on July 24 for their separate age groups.

Charles, 18, was selected for the under-19 squad while Peter, 13, made it into the under-13 squad after star performances for their school and clubs throughout the season.

The under-19 squad travels to Belfast to compete against tough opposition and the under-13s will go to Denmark to do battle for international honours.

The boys, both all-rounders, attend Merchiston Castle school in Edinburgh where they play most of their cricket.

Charles captained the Merchiston side and also plays club cricket for Watsonians, while Peter plays for the East Lothian cricket team.

Centuries

Charles was captain of this year's highly successful Merchiston 1st XI team which only lost one of its matches during the full season.

He also managed to score a double century, eight centuries and 20 half centuries which helped his Merchiston team to 23 wins out of its 25 matches played both north and south of the border.

Charles said: "I can't wait to play for my country over in Ireland and I'm really looking forward to the experience.

"I'm really happy to be picked for this squad but I'm very excited about being part of the national set-up as I missed out on the squad selection last year. I'd love to play for the Scotland team at the highest level and if I keep performing well then I might get the opportunity in the future. I'll still be eligible for the under-19s next year."

Peter was also delighted at his call-up and like his brother would also like to follow a career all the way to the top of the game as a professional.

Prospect

He said: "I was really chuffed at being named in the team as I had worked hard during the winter on my game.

"I'm still developing and playing at a higher level in this tournament should help me if I keep working hard as I'd really like to play professionally.

"I have a lot of friends in the team so it should be a lot of fun but again it will be hard work."

Charles Swan, Merchiston's director of sport and coach of Charles' team said: "I think Charles is an excellent prospect, both as a bowler and a batsman, and he has also been a fine leader as Merchiston captain.

"The fact that he scored 60 runs while playing for Scotland under-19s against the MCC underlines his ability.

"Young Peter looks to be just as talented.

" Like his brother he is a genuine all-rounder and has deserved his international honours."

The 13-man squads will play three two-day games against each of the other nations in a round robin set-up over a week from Monday, July 24.
