There are also frequent in-House or in-School social activities and other outside activities. Asli invites all the boys round at least twice a year on a more formal basis for tea, cakes and other food. On a more informal basis some boys are invited around many more times than that. Boys from the House cook with Asli in the kitchen and are just about always welcome to share tea and biscuits/cakes with Asli and Ayla during the day or in the evenings. Prefects are often invited around for drinks and food. Other events include:

· The Christmas Dinner
· The House Christmas Party and Secret Santa
· The Rogerson Roast
· House Chinese New Year Lunch
· Two Cinema Trips per term
· The occasional Theatre Trip
· International Rugby Matches
· Paintballing
· Trips to Ratho Adventure Centre
· Go-Karting
· Life Saving Courses

Facilities

The boys have many of the same facilities as the other houses such as videos and DVD players, three televisions in the House, Three computers with internet access, one of which has facilities for printing, A Prefects
Room and a kitchen and they also have access to a few fairly unique features:

· Washing done daily, in the House washing machines and tumble drier, by the Housekeeper and team
· A Table Football Table
· An Air Hockey Table
· The only full size Snooker Table in School
· A play station
· A Quiet Room

The Inter-dormitory Competition

This was set up to give a wider range of boys the chance to develop leadership and teamwork skills. It also covers a wide range of areas, rather than sport alone, giving ‘the sportingly challenged’ a chance to take a lead. It also provides the boys with both another competitive challenge and a great deal of fun. The dormitories have been re-named to make them more meaningful. Rather than geographical nomenclature like Top North etc. they are named after notable Merchistonians: Laidlaw, Baird and Swan. Elstob Dormitory is named after Lt. Colonel Wilfrith Elstob, the former French teacher from Merchiston, who won a posthumous Victoria Cross during the Ludendorff Offensive, in March 1918.
