Merchiston's primary distinguishing feature as a boarding school is its unusual 'horizontal' house system, whereby boys in each age group live together in a single house, and change house at the end of every school year. Academically, the school is mainly geared towards the English examination system leading to GCSEs and A levels. It does, howeverm combine elements of the Scottish system with this; some Standard Grade and Higher Examinations are sat by pupils where this is more appropriate. There are 430 pupils, of whom around 140 are in the Sixth Form, and 120 in the Junior School (Pringle).
About two-thirds of the pupils are boarders.
