Dean of Sixth Form
and Housemaster of Laidlaw South
Alex Anderson is a Housemaster for the second time in his Merchiston career, having previously been Housemaster of Evans for 6 years until 2002. A theologian by training, he is a member of the School's Chaplaincy team and teaches Religious Studies. He is also in charge of Community Service, and coordinates our programme of charitable giving. He currently also holds the title of Dean of Sixth Form

Housemaster of Laidlaw North
Rupert Heathcote was educated in Bath and at Nottingham and Liverpool Universities. Rupert came to Merchiston as Head of Geography and was in this position for 2 years before taking over as Housemaster to the Lower Sixth in September 2008. As well as teaching Geography, Rupert coaches rugby and is very keen on outdoor pursuits, being a qualified Mountain Leader. Rupert is married with a young son.

Housemaster of Evans
Dr Ian Mitchell took his degree in Physics at Strathclyde University and then followed this with a PhD at Imperial College, London. Several years of research and teaching followed at universities in London and Santiago, Chile. In 2006 Ian returned to his home country of Scotland and joined the Physics Department at Merchiston. He took on the housemastering role in September of 2008 and he is also Master in charge of Squash. Ian is married with two young children.
