The House is more like a hotel or modern university halls, and challenges the perceptions of traditional boys' boarding. There are 126 en-suite spacious bedrooms (the majority accommodating a double bed), with storage, shelving, trouser press, desk and study area, many complete with inspiring views. There are modern spacious kitchens and large open plan social spaces on every floor, with floor to ceiling glass walls that create a feeling of space and light. The walkways and social areas throughout the house offer stunning views of Edinburgh and Fife.
Pupil, Thomas, commented: “I think the House is very modern, and I like the design – things like; light switches
On the top floor of the House there is a Café area were boys come together to relax, socialise and watch TV on one of the plasma screens. There is also a multi-gym in the basement, seminar and study rooms and boys can use their laptops on the School network to study in their bedrooms. The new House also has private flats within the building for Housemasters, so help is always nearby should the boys need support. Parent, Diana Dalrymple, explained: “The communal spaces in the house are fantastic. Nice large kitchens are good for having a snack, getting together and even doing the odd bit of washing. The comfortable environment should encourage my son to fully concentrate on his studies during his important final year at Merchiston.”
Pupil, Max, explains: “You have more responsibility in the House which means making more decisions for yourself.”
