Rugby

‘Rugby is crushingly good here…’ Tatler Schools Guide 2015

Rugby is one of our three major sports. It is played in the Autumn and Lent Terms; competitive matches are usually against other Scottish schools (and clubs), but also against teams from England, Ireland and Wales.

In total, there are six senior teams and twelve junior teams, all of which have regular fixtures, details of which are frequently updated in the Calendar.

Merchiston competes in tournaments both locally and throughout the UK. Additionally, regular overseas tours are undertaken. In 2010, we became the first Scottish school to reach the semi-finals of the Rosslyn Park Sevens, the largest school boy tournament in the world. In 2014, the 1XV equalled the School’s best performance, achieving third place in the National Schools’ Festival at St Joseph’s, Ipswich.

65 Merchistonians have played at full international level, and Merchiston can also boast three British and Irish Lions in Sir Louis Greig, Roger Baird and John Jeffrey. We have also had 67 schoolboy internationalists and have won the Scottish Schools’ Cup five times.

The School understands that rugby may not appeal to all boys: however, in the early years, each boy has an opportunity to play in a team that suits his level. This gives everyone an opportunity to represent his School.

The School takes Health and Safety very seriously; we are a leading participant in the SRU’s “Are you ready to play rugby?” scheme, and have strict policies and procedures regarding match-day safety.
