With wet weather forecast in the morning, the boys sorted out final items of kit from the stores and then made their way down to Walkerburn, where the additional instructor was picked up. We drove back to Peebles, where we took the boats to the river’s edge and started the initial training.
Within ten minutes, we were on the water and, with all the rain over the past week, it was full and flowing fast. Thankfully, the heavy downpours had stopped and, with the forecast for the rest of the day set to be fair, with sunny spells, the boys were excited about the trip.
Paddling, turning and position were discussed on the river, but the boys soon learnt what to do and what not to do when on the water. Lunch was had at the picturesque Cardrona valley, and with the Tweed “love event” on, sandwiches were eaten with numerous bikers zooming past and lots of activities to look at. The final sections of the trip saw some rapids and the boys managed these with aplomb. We finished up and loaded the canoes onto the trailers, with lots of fun experiences and memories to head home with.
