Sports Facilities Appeal

proposed sports hall large

We are embarking on our biggest sporting development at Merchiston for a generation. We are upgrading our sports facilities with a number of major improvements. Our new facilities will be amongst the best in Scotland, and will enable more boys to enjoy the widest range of sports and to excel in those sports. More than that, we can expand how we help young people in the wider community by enlarging our existing programmes. We will be able to teach more young people to swim than we do now. Working with those schools without their own grounds, we will develop sports coaching programmes in rugby, football, tennis and golf. In this way we will share our sport for all philosophy far beyond our own boys.

How much will it cost?

Our new facilities will cost £12 million.  We are drawing down £8 million from our reserves and bank borrowing, but rely on your generosity for the £4 million balance.  Some people will give £50, others £100,000 or more.  Every single gift, of whatever value, matters, and is your personal investment in the future of our boys.  Thank you in anticipation of your support.

What are the new facilities?

Our current facilities were the best on offer when we built them.  However, now, many had had their day, and are greatly in need of upgrading.  Our sports pitches remain a fantastic asset, and we will compliment them with the following new facilities:

  • An outstanding sports centre, with two multi-purpose halls instead of one, a high quality fitness-suite, video analysis facilities, and up-to-date changing facilities.
  • A 6 lane x 25m swimming pool, built to competition standards, with outstanding changing facilities.
  • A 3G synthetic pitch, suitable for football and rugby, meaning not just use in all weathers and on winter evenings, but that out boys can train and develop skills on the fastest possible playing surface.
  • A general purpose sand-base all weather pitch, suitable for sports such as football, tennis, and in particular hockey; a sport in which we have a growing reputation.
