The Care Commission visit us twice a year to inspect all aspects of our pastoral care - one visit is announced beforehand and one is unannounced. This term we welcomed two inspectors, who spent two days in the School looking at our care of the pupils in relation to the following Care Standards:
Standard 3 - Care and protection: "You live in a warm and caring environment, and are protected from harm. At any time, there are enough staff available to help you when needed."
Standard 7 - Management and staffing: "You experience good quality care and support. This is provided by managers and staff whose training and expertise allows them to meet your needs. Your care is in line with the law and best-practice guidelines."
Standard 12 - Keeping well - lifestyle: "The school or hostel promotes a healthy lifestyle. You are confident that the staff will know your healthcare needs and arrange to meet them in a way that is best for you."
The verbal feedback was extremely complimentary about Merchiston's provision in these areas and the inspectors only made two small recommendations, namely that all dustbins in House kitchens should have lids on them to improve hygiene and that our excellent prefects should also receive child protection training. The inspectors commented favourably that they had rarely come across a school which invested so much responsibility and trust in its prefects. I have already mentioned the vital part played by them as role models for younger pupils. All parents will be sent a copy of the Care Commission's formal report when we receive it; while they only inspect our boarding pastoral care, we will also send the report to day parents. |
