As I have often said to the pupils and staff, our Memorial Hall was intentionally placed at the heart of the School and, if you notice, the Chalmers and Rogerson Houses look in on this building. Originally, the Headmaster supervised the 200 pupils doing prep in the Memorial Hall, took Prayers there, and shook each boy by the hand at the end of the day – hence our introduction of ‘handshaking’ at the beginning of every term.
Spirituality is important and this term we have had a variety of speakers at Sunday Services, including Rosemary Gillon, Andy Keulemans (Loretto Chaplain), Scott Burton (Youth Pastor at Morningside Baptist Church) and myself. This year, we had the Palm Sunday Service at Merchiston due to Easter falling so early. I have also really enjoyed seeing the growing numbers of boys attending the voluntary Eucharists, and this was particularly noticeable at the Epiphany Eucharist at the beginning of the term. I am most grateful to the Chaplaincy Team, Nick Blair, Alex Anderson, Rosemary Gillon and Philip Rossiter, for looking after our spiritual nourishment. |
