We always try to offer variety in terms of the speakers at the Commemoration Day Service and at Prizegiving. This special anniversary year, we have decided to invite Merchistonians to speak at both events. The Commemoration speaker will be Dr David Millar BA BSc D.Clin.Psych MSc, Merchistonian 80-85. David was a highly talented rugby player but suffered a serious spinal cord injury when playing rugby in New Zealand. He subsequently went back to university to retrain and now is now a Clinical Neuropsychologist at the Regional Neuroscience Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne. As ever, the programme will include the Art & Design and Design & Technology Exhibition in the Design Centre, a buffet lunch with music provided by the Choir, Close Harmony Group, Pipe Bands, Orchestra, Rock Bands and Jazz Band, which epitomise the wide variety of music making at Merchiston. We also hope to put together some 1833-2008 displays!

The Prizegiving speaker will be Robert S Grant LLB, Merchistonian 92-97, Associate with Linklaters, London. (Robert recently rowed 2800 miles across the Atlantic in a four-man boat, leaving La Gomera (Canaries) and arriving 48 days later in Antigua – his boat came first out of 26 boats, and his team raised over £18,850 for: Raleigh International, Crisis and the Big Issue Foundation. He ran the Marathon des Sables in March 2006, raising £12,000 for Facing Africa and Kids for Kids.)
