The Future is looking very bright for our Upper Sixth!
27th April, 2017
When boys leave a school like Merchiston, we wish them to be in the best possible position for the next stage of their life. If they decide to go to university, we believe it should be the university of their choice and the course they wish to read; ultimately, achieving their first choice is very important to us. Yes, there are the Russell Group universities, but there are also, in addition to these, some extremely competitive Scottish universities, European universities, world universities and lesser known universities which really excel in particular areas. So far this year, pupils have been offered places on an exciting range of undergraduate courses, including Medicine, Engineering, Journalism, PPE, Sport, and other Sciences, to name just a few. American universities have also been eager to entice our pupils across the pond, with offers from Columbia, NYU, SCAD, Syracuse, Emmerson and Middle Tennessee State.
Below is just a small selection of the institutions from which our pupils have received offers: Aberdeen, Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Dundee, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Heriot Watt, Imperial College, London School of Economics, Nottingham, Oxford, University College London, SOAS, St Andrews, and York.
Of course, it is important to bear in mind that moving straight to university from the Sixth Form is not always the best course of action for some boys. Pupils may choose to pursue a gap year to broaden their horizons and focus their thoughts on the best course of study for the future. Other boys may choose to pursue one of the many excellent apprenticeship or school-leaver pathways available, which can also lead to further qualifications, rewarding careers and bright futures.
