Golf: UK Junior National Champions 2017
22nd June, 2017
Yesterday, the Merchiston Golf Academy was crowned UK National Junior Champions for the second year in a row. The schools’ competition was played at Radley Golf Club, in the heart of Oxfordshire. With the top 25 Junior Golf Schools in the UK competing, and the thermometer topping 34 degrees, the stage was set for a wonderful day’s golf.
Three Scottish schools had qualified for the event: it was super to see such a strong representation from schools north of the Border! Leading the way for Merchiston was Scottish Internationalist, Cameron A. Cameron got off to a shaky start and found himself six over par through nine holes – not having played badly, but a few stray shots were punished over the unforgiving course. He steadied the ship through the turn and started to find his rhythm from then on. Finishing with a super par save on the 18th hole, Cameron played the back nine in level par. A strong 74 was posted as the first Merchiston score.
Lyle M was playing behind and, as focused as ever, he went through the front nine in a comfortable 2 over par. Still playing well, he maintained his composed form up until the 14th. Then, a tough stretch through 17, saw him fall back to 7 over par. Playing the last, and with two other schools already in the club house tying Merchiston’s score, Lyle hit his approach shot to a foot from the pin, and tapped in for his birdie three. He too finished on the same mark as Cameron, posting a 74 score.
With all schools in, Merchiston ended up winning the National Finals by one shot. What a great tournament, and well done to both Cameron and Lyle on their achievement!
