Andrew Dunn (83-90)
A Merchistonian, Andrew Dunn, visited Merchiston recently. He attended Merchiston from 1983-1990 and is the grandson of JAC Macdiarmid (1919). Andrew had a glittering career at School, Senior Prefect; member of the Tennis VI; winning the English, Economics, Political, Drama, and Kingsley Darling Prizes and the Duffus Medal. After Merchiston, he attended Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, from 1990-1993 where he read English. Thereafter, Andrew taught English in Spain for two years the purpose of which was also to teach himself Spanish. He then entered the 'business of books', as in publishing, and he gained work experience at 'Hodder's' before moving to International Sales. He now works with Francis Lincoln, the European Rights publisher and is involved in editorial work.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Andrew and, indeed, his son, Hector, to Merchiston as they considered Merchiston as a potential School for Hector! Unfortunately, Andrew's wife, Phoebe, and daughter, Aurora, were unable to join us from London as Aurora was recovering from chickenpox. They stayed in Morningside and by an extraordinary coincidence they bumped into Michael Billinghurst (Merchistonian 85-90) who runs Henri's of Edinburgh, Delicatessen & Wine Merchant in Morningside. Andrew also commented that, in his view, there was an extraordinarily strong dynamic amongst his Alumni yeargroup.
