We were delighted to welcome the Leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist party, Ruth Davidson, to the School yesterday. A level Government and Politics were joined by pupils from other Edinburgh schools to hear her speak briefly about the future of her party before she answered questions for the remainder of the session. A vast variety of topics was raised including the independence debate, university fees, prison sentencing and welfare reform.

During a meeting I attended on Monday night, a person whose judgment I trust hugely made the following interesting statement: "We are living in a post-modernist period of relativism; conversely, we all need a set of coherent values. Merchiston endeavours to provide a set of coherent values." This statement was presented at this week's Assembly. I also read out to the School an article from The Daily Telegraph entitled 'If you wouldn't say it face to face, don't put it on Facebook'. I reminded the School that the existence of Facebook Timeline means that everything anyone has ever written on Facebook is available for ever.
