The annual Lower Sixth Geography fieldtrip visited South Cumbria and Morecambe to investigate the regeneration of rural areas and the change of coastal towns in the UK. Thirty three pupils and four staff spent two days studying contrasting hill sheep and dairy farms and the specialist produce town of Kirkby Lonsdale. After a comfortable night at the Arnside YHA overlooking the scenic Morecambe Bay estuary, further fieldwork was completed in a rare crystal clear sunny February day on the Lancashire coast. Students considered the fall of Morecambe as a seaside resort and Urban Splash's renovation of the Art-Deco Midland Hotel (see interior photo below), a flagship development, which, along with the West End housing project, is hoped to revive the economy of Morecambe.
