We set off on Saturday afternoon and made our way to the accommodation in Kingussie (Craigower Lodge) for the night. We awoke to find more settled conditions than the night before. Some snow had fallen overnight and the group worked on crampon fitting, and appropriate use of ice axes and winter boots.
We set off from the car park at Newtonmore and made our way to the snow and ice within the first hour of the morning. The first essential skills that were learnt were kicking steps and foot movement on hard snow and ice. The ice axes came out later on and the boys worked on cutting steps into the ice to enable safe movement upwards.
When we found some steeper slopes we set up some ice axe arrest scenarios, and each boy learnt how to slow and stop themselves from feet down (and then later, head down) sliding positions.
