The CCF provides opportunities for a wide range of outdoor activities and helps boys understand the benefits of team work.
The CCF strength, in numbers, at Merchiston is made up from the entire Shell year group as an introductory year. Cadets from V Form, LVI and UVI are able to continue with CCF and complete Method of Instruction, Leadership, and Self Reliance Training, with the opportunity to take on a senior appointment with greater responsibility within the contingent. Cadets who remain within the UVI assist in the instruction of all aspects CCF to the younger cadets and from this year group the following are chosen: The Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM), and various Cadet Company Sergeant Majors (CSM).
Concurrent with the cadet training, they have the opportunity to complete a significant amount of the Duke of Edinburgh award, through Skills, Voluntary and Residential modules. We have also introduced the Cadet Vocational Qualifications Organisation (CVQO). From which the cadets, can with minimum extra work, gain a BTEC level 2 diploma in either Music or Public Service.
St George's School for Girls in Edinburgh has recently joined as a Cadet Company within our Contingent and during the Summer term both schools train together at Merchiston. CCF Summer camps and training weekends are also attended by both schools on a voluntary basis.
