Sixth Form 16+

What's so special about our Sixth Form?

For any parent or boy thinking about changing schools at the age of 16 or 17, there will be a big question as to whether it is the right thing to do. The risks, of adapting to a new environment so close to A levels or Highers, or of meeting new people and teachers, can often appear to outweigh any perceived benefits.

The only way to really make your mind up is to come and visit us.

In our Sixth Form boarding house, Laidlaw, every boy has his own room, en-suite shower, internet access and study area. See all the activities experiences on offer, and above all meet the boys, teachers, and the Merchiston community.

Our academic results show that Merchiston boys excel in the crucial A Level exams, which determine a boy's options for University and further education. Over the last five years our pass rate at A*, A, B and C at A level has always been between 93% and 95%.  In 2010 we had the best A*/A results of any school in Scotland. Over 85% of boys are accepted at their first choice of University.

For all boys Sixth Form is a culmination of their school days. It should be a time when they enjoy additional freedoms, are being prepared for the challenges of University, have fun - but also work hard and leave having achieved what they desired. At Merchiston we work hard to deliver a special experience for our boys in both Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth.

Sixth Formers - 3 boys
Sixth Form boys enjoy greater freedoms; but this is matched by greater responsibility and duties to help in the running of the School.
