Headmaster's welcome

Welcome to Merchiston. Whether you visit us as current or prospective pupils or parents, I hope that you will find something here on this site which reflects the true nature of the School.

For the last twelve years my wife Barbara and our family have been part of this friendly community in its magnificent parkland setting. Every day, as I walk the short distance from our house to my study, I think how lucky we are to be in such surroundings. But it is the people who make this place so special: the boys, their parents, and all of the staff who contribute in so many different ways.

The achievements of the boys over the last few years have placed Merchiston in the top flight of independent schools in the UK. This was endorsed by the Sunday Times when we were named Scottish Independent School of the Year 2009. We have no doubt this success is the result of our firm belief that a boys-only environment is best for boys; best for their academic achievement and best for developing their confidence and wellbeing.

Have a look in particular at the Why Merchiston? and the Merchiston Journey sections of this site as well as our Photo Galleries to give you a sense of what we have to offer. Our DVD is also an excellent way to get a quick feeling of the atmosphere and ethos of the School. No website can convey more than an impression of the school it represents, so if you are not familiar with Merchiston, I hope you will wish to come and visit us, and I look forward to meeting you.

Andrew Hunter, Headmaster.
